CARY AUTHOR SANDRA GUTIERREZ WINS INTERNATIONAL COOKBOOK AWARD

Cary cookbook author Sandra Gutierrez has won a 2016 Gourmand Award for her latest cookbook, “Empanadas.”

Gutierrez, a longtime local food writer, cooking instructor and cookbook author, won the single subject category in this international cookbook awards contest, which is in its 21st year. The awards will be given out May 29 in China.

Unfortunately, Gutierrez will not be attending but she’s delighted to have won.

“It’s so exciting,” Gutierrez said Friday morning.

In the United States, the most wellknown cookbook awards are given out by the James Beard Foundation and International Association of Culinary Professionals. Gutierrez described the Gourmand Awards as the Olympics since the awards are given out in dozens of categories to authors in different countries. For example, in the single subject category, Gutierrez was one of 14 winners from such countries as Belgium, Canada, Peru and Sweden.

Other U.S. winners include chef Hugh Acheson’s “The Broad Fork,” in the vegetarian category and Toni Tipton-Martin for “The Jemima Code” in the culinary heritage category. (Tipton-Martin is speaking Feb. 17 at Fearrington’s Granary restaurant. Read my earlier story HERE.)
