BROOKWOOD HONORED FOR EFFORTS IN STEM EDUCATION

A special guest, and a special gift, were the cause of much fanfare Friday morning at Brookwood Elementary School.With the school’s gymnasium filled with every student and teacher, along with Dalton Public Schools officials — more than 300 people — state Schools Superintendent John Barge and a group of students unveiled a banner signifying Brookwood’s new designation as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) certified school.Brookwood is just the twelfth school in the state to be awarded the certification by the Georgia Department of Education, and the only one outside of the Metro Atlanta area, Barge said.“We are very excited about that,” Barge said during the ceremony. “Our state absolutely depends on education in these STEM areas. I was just amazed when I read about what all (the teachers and students) are doing here.”To earn the STEM certification, the school had to submit an application showing that it meets rigorous criteria, such as evidence of teacher collaboration, business and industry partnerships, high levels of math and science instruction, and an integrated, project-based STEM curriculum.
