After running a successful restaurant in Fort Payne, Alabama, for about four years, Justin Sweeney has opened a second location near Highland Park.

"I feel fortunate that I've been given the opportunity to capitalize on what was already in Highland Park," he said of the nearly 3,000-square-foot space that used to be a mattress store. "You don't have to go 2 miles [toward downtown] to build something special."

The new restaurant, called The Spot Coffee Shop, has been open for a week.

And customers can get a variety of items besides coffee, including breakfast and lunch paninis, soups, salads, and frozen drinks and ice cream.

Sweeney, who has a background in plumbing and electrical work, did much of the build-out for the new business. He made the tables; he wired and hung the light fixtures.

The space has a variety of seating options, including couches and tables with built-in phone chargers.

Eventually, he hopes to serve beer and create more outside seating.

He currently employs six people ...
