“THE PURPLE LADY” TO RECEIVE 2017 RUTH HOLMBERG ARTS LEADERSHIP AWARD

Sonia Young, known as "The Purple Lady," will be honored during the 2017 Ruth Holmberg Arts Leadership Award presentation March 7.

ArtsBuild[1] will host the event at the Hunter Museum of American Art[2] from 6 to 8 p.m.

The award was established in 2014 to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions to the arts in Chattanooga and is actively engaged in the cultural life of the community.

Young has been serving the Chattanooga arts community for decades. After graduating from Chattanooga High School, she received a Bachelor of Arts from Tulane University before returning to Chattanooga to get a masters degree from UTC.

In the 1980s, Young wrote and directed the youth theater production "Purple Princess" for the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. That was a driving force behind the creation of the CTCs Youth Theatre, which Young considers her most meaningful accomplishment.

Bob Willie, executive director of the Chattanooga Ballet, nominated Young for the award.
