The oldest speculative literary fiction convention in Chattanooga returns for a 42nd year, and organizers are hoping new programming will encourage more youth participation.

Chattacon 42[1] will take place at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Jan. 2022. Registration is $40 per person through Dec. 31 and then $50 leading up to and the day of the event.

The yearly programming features workshops, performances, robot battles, costume parties, independent films and dealers.

But although the focus is on the literary aspects of fandom, organizers have started gradually adding programming each year to entice younger conventiongoers. In particular, new programming such as computer gaming and a focus on young adult fiction have helped spur interest from a new generation. So has the extensive gaming room with board and role-playing games.

"We like to call ourselves a multigenre convention," said Lani Brooks, Chattacon's director of programming. "Our base is the literary side of science fiction/fantasy, but we've done a lot to update our program to have a more broad appeal for younger fans."
